Steam big picture doesn't recognise my controller, and when I followed these instructions:https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/2mttfq/how_can_i_connect_my_xbox_controller_to_my_ubuntu/Xboxdrv said no controller connected, but it came up as logic3 in lsusb. Any ideas? By the way, I'm a complete newbie to Linux, I've had it under a week.
Xbox One Bluetooth controllers don't work well with Parsec currently, and may map incorrectly. In order to use an Xbox One controller with macOS, you'll need to use a USB cable (and the Xbox controller driver) RASPBERRY PI XBOX CONTROLLERS. If you're using the Raspberry Pi version of Parsec, you'll need to install drivers for the controllers. Steam big picture detects my controller, but wont respond to it I recently purchased an Xbox One controller, and the controller settings in steam big picture say Detected Controller: XInput compatible controller.

My MadCatz fightstick (

) works fine in Steam's Big Picture Mode out of the box on 14.04.'logic3 in lsusb' doesn't look like an official controller made and sold by Micosoft for the Xbox 360. Most drivers and software use the USB IDs to detect devices that they are compatible with. If your device is not included in the list of compatible IDs the driver/software will not pick it up and it will not work. You could probably add the USB ID and compile the software yourself or find an option in the software manual to provide the necessary details to make the driver work with the device. Providing the USB ID from lsusb would have been helpful, without it it is almost impossible to give an accurate answer or get your problem solved by developers.
The link you posted leads to Chrome OS Reddit, if you use a Chrome OS device without an Ubuntu Linux kernel then note that you are not in supported on-topic territory here and the solution given in Takkat's comment may not work for you (incompatible legacy kernel or wrong architecture).
Ubuntu on AskUbuntu means a supported Ubuntu configuration which means a server, desktop or laptop installation through Ubuntu install media or Ubuntu on phones, tablets and other 'smart' or embedded devices.
An installation from install media provides it's own Linux kernel – the vital part of any Linux distribution. Some of them have long term support from the Linux Foundation, Canonical (Ubuntu LTS) or another company/distributor. Everything else becomes deprecated and unsupported very quickly. Some smart and embedded devices can keep up with recent Linux kernel releases, but the majority does not. This is where product teams and maintainers take additional effort to support these devices and make them operate with the least flaws, even if the devices run an old kernel.
Google or the device manufacturer is the maintainer and primary support contact for Chromebooks and other Chrome branded devices where you cannot install the kernel of the Linux distribution you actually want to use.
Big Picture Detects Microsoft Xbox One Controller Driver Twice Windows 7
Everyone who advertised or wrote about 'installing' Linux distribution XY on Chrome devices had a responsibility to tell you this: No supported Linux kernel = No support. But they all went crazy and bought defective by design trash, that's worse than everything Microsoft ever successfully brought to x86 consumer devices.
Please make educated purchase decisions and forget about all these bound to one kernel release devices.

I managed to get mine working, and complicating matters more, I am even playing through a Steam Link. Dpad now works, and driving vehicles works fine too. I hadn't realized that I needed to restart Steam after changing controller options. For me, again, I'm using an updated XBOX ONE S controller.
What I did was go into settings in steam, and controllers, and checked the xbox (and PS4 while I was there) options, I then restarted Steam. There was some sort of option I had to change in Big Picture itself too in Steam Link's screen, but I forget. I'll get more details and update here later when I get a chance.
